Central West Structures Replacement

Civil Project Partners provided specialist planning support for the Central West Structures Replacement project on Queensland Rail’s Central Western Line. Engaged by the Joe Wagner Group, the team focused on optimising shutdown strategies and pre-closure works for bridge pier replacements across multiple remote sites. The project involves complex structural interventions delivered within tight possession windows, requiring detailed sequencing, compliance with Queensland Rail standards, and efficient coordination of resources and methodologies.

Scope

The Central West Structures Replacement project involves the renewal of critical bridge infrastructure along Queensland Rail’s Central Western Line between Emerald and Longreach. The program focuses on the replacement of bridge piers across multiple sites, requiring a combination of pre-closure and possession-based construction activities.

Pre-closure works primarily consist of piling operations, carefully staged to align with Queensland Rail’s operational and safety requirements. Possession works include structural interventions such as temporary propping of existing bridges, headstock removal and replacement, installation of new bridge beams, and reinstatement of track infrastructure.

The geographically dispersed nature of the sites introduces logistical and coordination challenges, requiring detailed planning of resources, plant, and sequencing. Works must be executed within constrained rail shutdown windows, necessitating highly efficient construction methodologies and precise scheduling.

The project demands strict adherence to Queensland Rail standards and procedures, with a strong focus on safety, constructability, and maintaining network integrity. Overall, the scope represents a complex, multi-site structural renewal program within an operational rail environment.

Service Provided

Civil Project Partners provided detailed rail shutdown planning and construction sequencing for multiple bridge replacement sites along Queensland Rail’s Central Western Line. This included development of precise hourly possession programmes to optimise limited track access windows. Pre-closure works were strategically planned, with a focus on piling, ensuring compliance with Queensland Rail procedures. The team also undertook optioneering of steel and concrete beam solutions to support efficient and constructible designs. Constructability planning was delivered to maximise productivity during possessions while minimising disruption to live rail operations.
