The Queensland Government has unveiled bold new plans to support the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with major infrastructure set to reshape the city and deliver lasting legacy benefits.
Here are the key highlights:
🏟️ New 63,000-seat stadium at Victoria Park – To host the Opening & Closing Ceremonies and Athletics.
🏊 National Aquatic Centre at Centenary Pool, Spring Hill – Featuring multiple pools and 25,000 seats for Swimming, Diving, Artistic Swimming and Water Polo.
🏢 Upgraded RNA Showgrounds – To become the Athletes’ Village with a 20,000-seat arena for key events.
🎾 Enhanced Queensland Tennis Centre – Including a new 3,000-seat show court and 12 new match courts.
In addition, to the key venue announcements, the government also confirmed infrastructure investments across the state, including:
🚄 Faster Rail to the Sunshine Coast
🚌 Rapid Bus Metro from Birtinya to Sunshine Coast Airport
🛣️ Investment in the Commera Connector
💰 Investment across the length of the Bruce Highway
🏘️ Athletes’ Villages in Rockhampton, Sunshine Coast, RNA Showgrounds & Gold Coast
Civil Project Partner Ryan O’Neill welcomed the announcement, saying, “We have seen a decisive approach by the government in developing new facilities and upgrading existing ones that are already key parts of our communities in Brisbane and across the entire state.”
“From Cairns to the Gold Coast, communities will benefit from confirmed investment in transformative infrastructure. Rail and Metro Services for the Sunshine Coast, upgrades to the Bruce Highway, and further investment in the Coomera Connector will support Queensland’s growth.
“As for the decision to build a new 63,000-seat stadium at Victoria Park, it should increase Brisbane’s ability to attract major events that it currently misses out on. QSAC was always going to be a challenging sell to Queenslanders, and, due to its temporary nature, one that could never yield a return on investment, especially given the lack of public transport options.”
“The ball will be in the private sector’s court to build and fund the proposed Brisbane Arena at the old GoPrint site, taking some load off the taxpayer. Queensland does not have the best track record on market-led proposals. Therefore, it will be interesting to see the government’s approach to securing private funding.”
“The $7.1 billion funding envelope was always optimistic, especially now, with a shorter runway to deliver the key projects. Therefore, the market lead proposal and the long-term financial opportunities created by athletes’ villages and new urban centres will be required to do some of the heavy lifting to support the budget.”
“What is also worth considering is how the changes to the Gabba and RNA Showgrounds will benefit Cross River Rail. There was a risk that Exhibition and Gabba station would be underutilised, reliant upon events for patronage. With an athletes’ village at the RNA Showgrounds and additional housing at the Gabba, daily and therefore lifetime patronage of Brisbane’s largest transport project will increase significantly,” said Ryan.
