There is a sense of optimism in construction and infrastructure in the Sunshine State. Buoyed by major projects coming to life and new investment earmarked for major projects, we caught up with the team to find out the projects they are most looking forward to seeing develop in 2021.
Project
M1 Upgrade – Coomera Connector
Location
Gold Coast, Jacobs Well to Helensvale
Why will the project benefit Brisbane/Queensland/Australia?
Anyone who has ever driven to Gold Coast from Brisbane on a weekday or a holiday weekend will know why! The traffic comes to standstills frequently, and the current exits for M1 become a little bit dangerous with traffic backing up onto the highway.
With engineering analysis working to an optimal solution, it will benefit the development of SEQ and meet the need for future capacity as the region continues to grow.
What excites you about the project?
One of my first engineering roles (as an undergrad) was working on the Pacific Motorway Upgrade at Logan.
As the wheel turns, further investment is needed, and it is pleasing to watch the revolution come around. I am also excited about the long procurement timeframe, which stretches over a couple of years, and we are hoping to be involved at some stage.
Project
Inland rail
Location
South West Qld / Northern NSW
Why will the project benefit Brisbane/Queensland/Australia?
This is a true nation-building project, one that will create significant investment and economic growth, which should result in employment and boost the economies in the smaller country towns along the route.
What excites you about the project?
The scale of the project will require many facets and disciplines to be employed to complete. I understand that there will be 3 of these projects running concurrently, so there will be a ‘piece of cake’ for everyone. This requirement strengthens the whole of the industry from Tier 1 contractors to small businesses both directly and indirectly.
Civil Project Partners has been involved previously with inland Rail and understand the shear number of people required to pull a tenders like this together. The commitment of many people for the one cause is truly remarkable.
Project
Cross River Rail – Delivery Stage
Location
Woolloongabba
Why will the project benefit Brisbane/Queensland/Australia?
It is an interesting project because of its scale and the potential improvement to commuter times.
The project wasn’t endorsed by Infrastructure Australia for partial federal funding as they felt the cost/ benefit analysis didn’t stack up, so interesting why the State government was so keen to spend $5bn+ on it and whether it will return the promised results.
What excites you about the project?
I pass the Gabba site every day on the way to and from work, and there seems to be some major heavy civil engineering going on. I have never been involved in a project with a Tunnel Boring Machine, so it would be great to spend a day on-site looking at the process.
Project
Mt Lindesay Hwy (Stoney Camp Road to Chambers Flat Rd
Location
Chambers Flat – Logan
Why will the project benefit Brisbane/Queensland/Australia?
This is another project that will drive growth as it services the major growth of the master-planned communities in that area
What excites you about the project?
Civil Project Partners did the preliminary design and detailed Design cost estimating on it for BG&E. It was fast-tracked from design to construction due to the need of the Federal Government to stimulate the economy through infrastructure investment for projects that are “shovel ready”.
It will be great to see the final product delivered from something Civil Project Partners has been instrumental in progressing.
Project
Brisbane Metro
Location
Brisbane CBD and inner suburbs
Why will the project benefit Brisbane/Queensland/Australia?
This will be the first turn up and go public transport system in Brisbane, which means no need to check timetables. It will make it easier, safer and faster to move around Brisbane without the need for private vehicles.
What excites you about the project?
No need to look at schedules, reliable and on-time public transport, 24 hours a day on weekends. It is a significant missing link in Brisbane’s commuter and public transport network.
Project
Mount Lindesay Highway
Location
Mount Lindesay Highway, Munruben. From Stoney Camp Road to Chambers Flat Road
Why will the project benefit Brisbane/Queensland/Australia?
Works consist of the duplication of the existing carriageway on Mount Lindesay Highway, bringing great benefit to the increasingly busy area of Logan South.
What excites you about the project?
I find this project interesting because we were engaged in an early stage of design, so we actively participated in its evolution up to Detail Design, during 2020.
This project went out to tender a couple of months ago, and construction is currently being undertaken.
Another aspect I personally find interesting is that this project is the next consecutive section upgrade of that corridor. For the previous section – Rosia Road to Stoney Camp Road – back in 2019, I was involved in the estimate for a competitive construction tender. It is of great satisfaction to witness the evolution continuity supported by new infrastructure in South East Queensland.
Project
Somerset and Wivenhoe Dam Safety Upgrades
Location
Somerset construction commence 2021 (followed by Wivenhoe)
Why will the project benefit Brisbane/Queensland/Australia?
Water security and management are essential to the region’s development and growth and the upgrades to the dams will provide greater flood control, renewed facilities and support a modernised water system.
What excites you about the project?
As much as I appreciate the engineering aspect, I am perhaps nostalgic about growing up BCFing at both dams, something that has stayed.
Also, my first ever project was Hinze Dam Upgrade which I thoroughly enjoyed being apart of.
Project
Youngs Crossing Bridge
Location
Petrie / Whiteside / Joyner upstream on the North Pine River
Why will the project benefit Brisbane/Queensland/Australia?
It is the western route to the Greater northern Brisbane area, when it floods it causes considerable delay to the travelling public as there are only two other crossings without having to either bypass on the western side of the North Pine Dam or eastern via Redcliffe and the Hornibook Bridge.
What excites you about the project?
It’s a project in my local area, my first significant construction project as project manager was a few km up the road from this site, which is why I moved to the area about 12 years ago. After quite some years away I have recently moved back and followed the development of the options with interest.
